Well-supported two-year-old Mo Almighty stamped himself as a horse to keep a close eye on following a rousing victory in the $85,000 Restricted Maiden race over 1200m on Sunday.
A laudable fifth to Streetwise after a torrid trip three wide in the fourth Leg of the Singapore Golden Horseshoe series, the Inglis Ready2Race Stakes (1200m), Mo Almighty (Barend Vorster) enjoyed a much easier journey scraping paint in fifth spot before producing his winning run at the top of the straight.
Peeled off the back of leader Silver Joy (Nooresh Juglall) and favourite Lord Of Light (Vlad Duric), the Uncle Mo colt bounded away once in the clear towards a most emphatic maiden win, no doubt also aided by the postage-stamp weight on his back (51.5kgs).
Behind the battle for the minors was in earnest, with the nod eventually going to debutant Attention (Michael Rodd) for a Cliff Brown forecast. The Trusting three-year-old dashed late between runners to win the three-way tussle with Lord Justice (Glen Boss) and Lord Of Light by a head, with another head separating third and fourth.
The winning time was 1min 10.22secs for the 1200m on the Short Course.
“He won a very good race. It’s good for the owner and everybody,” said Brown.
“Obviously the difference in weights helped, too. He’s a lovely horse, who showed speed at his first run but had no luck from the wide draw.
“The second horse (Attention) also ran well. We rushed him to get to this race as he turns four next week.”
Vorster said Mo Almighty ($20) won on raw ability and can only get better with time.
“He always felt like he had a lot of ability. He had a good first run and ran a decent race,” said the South African lightweight jockey.
“Today, it was a bit rough around the first corner, but once I was able to get him to concentrate, he was good all the way to the line, and put it away quite easily.
“He’s still immature as he was looking around at the 200m. There is still some more improvement to come out of him.
“I think he will be even better when he goes over further.”
