Gingerella scores first-up after long spell

3 minute read

Gingerella came out of a seven-month break to win the Metro A event over 1150m at Sungai Besi here today. It was as if she’s never been away.

Despite the long layoff, punters installed the daughter of Gingerbread Man a firm second favourite in the set-weight race run on the No. 2 track.

The nine-year-old was the first to break but apprentice Azizi Azhari allowed ROCKET HORSE to take the lead and settled second on the rails until the top of the straight.

Gingerella  raced up to Rocket Horse  at the 300m, raced past the leader in a matter of strides and kicked away to a clear lead.

FA FA STAR came on strongly in the final 100m but GINGERELLA had enough to spare to win by a neck.

GINGERELLA won once and was placed thrice in five starts in her only season at three in Western Australia.

She made an immediate impact in Singapore where she was unbeaten in her first three starts at Kranji. She went on to pick up one more win and contested the Lion City Cup twice but her career was hampered by injuries.

Sent over the causeway to Teh Ming Wan in early 2021, GINGERELLA began to regain her form and scored two wins later that season. She picked up one win each in the last two years.

"We are happy she (GINERELLA) wins again," said Teh. "She's been spelling for a long time due to some injuries."

"She is always consistent and hopefully she pulls up well after this run. We are targeting her for the Perak Gold Vase in two weeks' time."

"After a good jump, I chose to settle GINGERELLA behind ROCKET HORSE and take cover," said Azizi who was riding the mare for the first time.

"At the top of the straight, I took her outside of the leader and she cruised home. The going suited her and she seemed to be enjoying racing after the long spell. She will be better next start."
