Trainer Dean Kannemeyer has some critical decisions to make with South Africa’s Equus champion stayer It’s My Turn.

Kannemeyer has a start in Turffontein’s G1 Summer Cup on December 1 “on the table” for It’s My Turn but says his participation will depend on how he performs in a barrier trial this weekend as well as discussions with owner Fred Crabbia.

It’s My Turn had a break after his magnificent feat of winning three G3 staying races in the space of five weeks at the end of last season in the Track And Ball Derby over 2400m at Scottsville, the Gold Vase over 3000m at Greyville and the Gold Cup over 3200m at Greyville.

The question is whether the Summer Cup trip of 2000m will be too sharp for him although he did win the G1 Cape Derby over that trip at Kenilworth as a three-year-old.

“Obviously he’s a brilliant stayer, that’s his real game,” Kannnemeyer. “We will see how the preparation goes and I will discuss it with Fred, but the Summer Cup is definitely on the table.”

Kannemeyer reckons the barrier trial will bring the 6YO on “tremendously” and feels he would need just one subsequent race start before the Summer Cup.

“He is a tall, light-framed horse and comes back to himself quickly. He is doing well and moving well and we will take it day by day,” Kannemeyer said.

It’s My Turn was heading the Summer Cup betting but has been displaced by Cascapedia after the classy mare won the G2 Spring Fillies and Mares Challenge over 1450m at Turffontein last Saturday.

The Irish-bred daughter of High Chaparral was having her first start since the G1 L’Ormarin’s Queen’s Plate and improved her career record to six wins from eight starts.

The Mike De Kock-trained pair Noble Secret and Takingthepeace are next in the Summer Cup market after pleasing efforts at Turffontein last weekend.

Takingthepeace, winner of the G2 Gauteng Fillies Guineas and G1 SA Fillies Classic, needed the run behind Cascapedia while Noble Secret ran on well from last in the G2 Spring Challenge over 1450m for a good fifth behind Captain Aldo.

De Kock’s three-year-olds Alyaasaat and Soqrat were second and third behind the 1400m specialist Captain Aldo in the Spring Challenge in strong trials for the the Investec Dingaans over 1600m on November 24.

Dean Kannemeyer’s promising filly Hashtagyolo has been sent to Cape Town for the summer season while his G1 Sun Met runner up Last Winter has arrived in Dubai.

The four-year-old Hashtagyolo is unbeaten in her three career starts including impressive wins in the KZN Fillies Guineas Trial and the G 3 Flamboyant Stakes at Greyville.

She has beaten Fiorella twice by wide margins before that filly went on to bigger things and was subsequently named KZN champion three-year-old filly.

Hashtagyolo was ante-post favourite for the Gauteng Fillies Guineas in March before picking up a virus and which saw her miss much of the season and have two spells in a Johannesburg equine clinic.

She recuperated on part-owner Bruce Le Roux’s Spring Valley Stud in Mooi River and showed her well-being three weeks ago when winning a barrier trial effortlessly over 1000m at Scottsville.

“Hashtagyolo has a wonderful pedigree and is an exciting prospect,” Kannemeyer said.

Last Winter, now a five-year-old, was set for Dubai after finished a flying second in the Sun Met at just his sixth career start.

He has gone through the quarantine procedures and stayed in Newmarket in the UK during his long journey to Mike De Kock’s Dubai stable.

Kannemeyer remains his trainer and will fly to Dubai next month to oversee his preparation.
