Master Carpenter, a colt who'd been beaten at Sandown only last weekend, came good in this £150,000 contest at odds of 14-1, winning in the hands of Phillip Makin.
The Rod Millman-trained four-year-old was the only horse who could get to and pass long-time leader Kelinni, who was given a fine ride from 3lb claimer Shane Gray, going down by just a neck.
Mount Logan ran on all too late to finish third with Forgotten Hero (fourth) and Ajman Bridge (fifth) also finishing well.
Master Carpenter had the class to win this, and in hindsight maybe his price was a bit too big. He was a Group 3 winner in France as a three-year-old but had not been firing this term until his third-placed effort over a mile at Sandown last weekend and he clearly relished this longer trip.James Millman, son and assistant to Rod Millman, said: "He's run a cracker and it's a brilliant result after quite a disappointing season. Phil has given him a cracking ride."
The son of Mastercraftsman was never too far from the lead, which turned out to be crucial. Kelinni, who had dictated the pace under Gray, kicked clear some three furlongs from home and had most of the field in trouble. It soon became evident that those held up were too far back and only Master Carpenter was going with the leader.
With a target to aim at Makin pounced a furlong out but the winner had to work hard to see off the Kevin Ryan-trained Kelinni, who ran a smashing race in defeat.
Winning jockey Makin said: "We had a nice draw in stall one, I didn't have to use any petrol and he travelled great."
