Missed Call wins at Kempton Park

3 minute read

Missed Call, sent off a 10/1 chance, made it two wins from four career starts on the All-Weather when taking the Listed 32Red Floodlit Stakes on Polytrack at Kempton Park.

The five-year-old Authorized mare, trained by James Fanshawe and ridden by Tom Queally, was settled in third last as Hamelin (Lady Cecil/Stevie Donohoe) soon took up the running, followed by Frenzified (Luca Cumani/Martin Lane) and Her Majesty The Queen's Dartmouth (Sir Michael Stoute/Ted Durcan) who was gambled on down to 15/8 favourite.

Missed Call was second last turning for home in the 12-furlong contest with nine runners but made good progress to go fourth with a furlong remaining and continued her run to lead in the closing stages, beating Hamelin by a neck in 2m 31.91s, with Dartmouth a further half-length back in third.

It was a second Kempton Park victory for Missed Call, who captured an 11-furlong handicap in October last year, while Hamelin was the final British runner for Lady Cecil, who is giving up training.

Fanshawe completed a 59.5/1 double in the next race, the 32Red Casino Handicap (7.40pm), with his only other runner on the night - three-year-old Makfi filly Osipova.

The 9/2 hope, with the double-achieving Shane Kelly up and owned by Cheveley Park Stud, raced in second but was switched wide in the straight, dropping back to fourth briefly.

She came through late to beat the 5/4 market leader, Godolphin's Movie Set (Saeed bin Suroor/Oisin Murphy), by a neck in the slowly-run 11-runner race in 2m 36.29s over 12 furlongs.

Osipova was also winning at Kempton Park for the second time, having taken a maiden at the same distance in August.

Newmarket-based Fanshawe commented: "Kempton Park is a lucky track for me and my horses do much better there than at the other All-Weather tracks.

"I am not sure why, but I suppose when you do well at a course, you tend to run more horses there.

"Missed Call has performed well all year and showed her toughness when winning a race at the Shergar Cup in August, was then a bit unlucky at Chester and put a good performance when second in the Group Three Cumberland Lodge at Ascot last month.

"She was again really tough tonight and showed a good turn of foot. She has had quite a long year so I am not sure if she will run again on the All-Weather, though she likes the surface. I will have to study the All-Weather programme book.

"Osipova was a bit unlucky at Kempton in September. She is a big filly and likely to improve from three to four. I will consult with the owners about what to do next with her.

"I have a few horses to run on the All-Weather, including three back here on Monday, and if they continue to run like these two tonight I won't want to stop!"

It was also a good night for Malcolm Denmark, who owns Missed Call, because Richard Hughes sent out his first winner as a trainer with the Shane Kelly-ridden 9/4 favourite Duchess Of Marmite in the opener, the two-mile 32Red On The App Store Handicap, scoring by a neck from Flighty Filia (Amanda Perrett/Jim Cowley).

Denmark owns Weathercock House, the Lambourn stables that Hughes, the three-time champion Flat jockey, moved his 60-strong string into on Saturday, having started training a few months ago in Hampshire. Top-weight Duchess Of Marmite was Hughes' first runner from Weathercock House.
