Stars to shine at Lingfield

3 minute read

Ralph Beckett and Rob Hornby can team up for more glory with River Of Stars in the At The Races App Form Study Fillies’ Novice Stakes at Lingfield on Wednesday evening.

The duo landed the Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket last week with Prosperous Voyage, with Hornby also bagging the July Cup on Alcohol Free for a famous Group One double.

While River Of Stars is not up to that level yet, her connections will certainly have to hope she can pick up some black type somewhere along the way given what she has shown in three runs to date.

The Sea The Stars filly, from a German family on the dam's side, showed plenty in two outings at two, finishing third behind a Gosden hotpot on debut before a close second at Nottingham in October.

She has only been seen once this season in a hotly-contested Newbury maiden over a mile and a half, with the winner, Perfect Alibi, going on to run in the Queen's Vase and while she failed to make an impact against the colts, she is now rated 93.

River Of Stars was beaten a head by her, while the third, Eternal Pearl, won by over seven lengths next time out at Kempton with a rating of 102 having already gained black type when second at Goodwood to Sea Silk Road.

Even if Eternal Pearl failed to run to her rating at Newbury, the form still stands up and while she faces some promising rivals – including Frankie Dettori's sole ride on the card in Dignified – River Of Stars can take this before going on to better things.

The Seamus Mullins-trained Vin Rouge can bring up his hat-trick in the Paddy Sheehan Memorial Handicap.

Having gone 13 races without success, he won for the first time at Lingfield easily and then followed up under a 5lb penalty.

He is now 10lb higher than for the first of those wins, but is clearly in the form of his life.

Backing two-year-olds with penalties is never normally a good idea, but Ed Dunlop looks to have found a very good opportunity for Liberation Bay in the Download The At The Races App EBF Fillies' Restricted Novice Stakes.

She almost defied the penalty at Ripon when beaten just a neck and this looks a weaker race.

Kodiac Sign has hardly set the world alight in three runs for Sir Michael Stoute, but may find life easier in the Freederm Apprentice Handicap at Yarmouth.

He is far less exposed than all of his opponents and while an opening mark of 78 is hardly a gimme, the 3lb allowance Harry Davies has is very handy.

It was a frustrating weekend for Charlie Appleby given he was second in the Superlative Stakes, July Cup and two Grade Ones in America.

He still looks likely to be hard to beat in the trainer's table, though, and Princeville can given him another winner in the Diomed EBF Maiden Stakes.

Beaten less than a length on his debut at this track, he can show the benefit of that experience.

Quite how Noya finished out of the frame last time out is a mystery, as she was still in front with 50 yards to go.

Harry and Roger Charlton's three-year-old probably needs holding up longer, which might be difficult against just two rivals, but she sets the standard in the Ibuleve Handicap.

Grantley Hall also faces just two rivals in the Racing TV-sponsored Novice Stakes at Catterick and given how promising she looked when winning at Redcar, it will be disappointing if she fails to follow up.

David Simcock's Oriental Art can defy top weight in the Brighton Follow @attheraces On Twitter Maiden Handicap at Brighton, while Lunar Shadow can atone for a recent fall in the Total Waste Management Mares' Novices' Hurdle at Uttoxeter.
