Irish Champions Stakes day Saturday

3 minute read

This meeting is held at Leopardstown and has a great card.

The first Group race of the afternoon is the Solonaway Stakes G2 over 1600m with 12 runners.  As usual the O'Brien runners (and not just Aidan) are out in force and Aidan's Diego Velazques is on 15/8 with the English raider Maljoom on 5/2 Haggis-Marquand.

Mutasarref is on 5/1 for Lyons-Keane and our roughie here is Gaien, who was beaten by Mutasarref but not by that much and is on 14/1 – Joseph O'Brien-McMonagle.

The "Justify" Matron Stakes over 1600m has 10 runners and we love Porta Fortiuna who is favourite here on 11/8 for Donnacha O'Brien with Tom Marquand riding.  Fallen Angel has been doing well for Karl Burke whose yard is in good form and James Doyle riding and they are on 7/2.  Ylang Ylang hasn't quite lived up to expectations but is still very handy and comes in here on 6/1 with Ryan Moore riding for Aidan.

The Irish Champion Stakes is G1 over 2000m with a field of 7.  There's a strong Japan connection here with one of the top chances (Auguste Rodin) having a Japanese sire (Deep Impact) and a Japanese runner (Shin Emperor) who was sired by a French stallion (Siyouni).  Favourite is Economics on 6/5 but Auguste Rodin at home seems to be a much better proposition than when he travels and 5/2 is tempting and of course we are going to back Shin Emperor on 12/1 – he's a full brother to French Derby winner Sotsass who is now at stud in Ireland and his trainer has set him on a similar path to his brother with the Arc being the ultimate aim.
