Back to his best in winning the Prince of Wales.
That was the highlight of Wednesday's racing at Ascot where the weather gods continued to smile. It was a question of "if" and the answer was a strong "yes" as he got the perfect ride from Ryan Moore and held out from the flying French with Zarakem running a blinder for Reynier-Guyon making a mockery of his 33/1 price. Horizon Dore was up there too for third and it looked like at one stage that he had been galloped on so it was a gutsy run. The Prince of Wales was on hand to present the trophy.
Earlier the Queen Mary justified our opinion that in 2yo races with big fields anything can happen and like in the Coventry anything did happen with the win going to Karl Burke's Leovanni, a daughter of Kodi Bear, who was given a great ride by James Doyle. She was on 22/1 with the second Mighty Eriu on 50/1 and the third Maw Lam 50/1 only a neck away.
The Queen's Vase was kinder on the punters with the first three finishing in market order. That is Illinois the winner from stablemate Highbury with Birdman third. Our roughie Mina Rashid was hampered badly at one stage and didn't really get back into the race. She stays in the Little Black Book.
The Duke of Cambridge was a welcome win for the Gosdens with the quinella of Running Lion first and Laurel second. Doom was third on 12/1. Rogue Millenium was disappointing and Breege was wide and never really in the mix.
