With the scratching of The Lion in Winter (hoof problem) the field was reduced to 5 runners.
And the going was soft. However Shadow of Light managed to find a pat through to win and get the rare Middle Parl-Dewhurst double. It was a tight finish with the winner a neck ahead of the O'Brien second Expanded ad a further neck back to Ancient Truth.
There was quite a to-do after the Cesarewitch as the winning jockey was suspended for over-hitting but the horse was left as the winner – Alphonse le Grand who started on 33/1. Manxman was the second who may become the winner if a further enquiry disqualifies Alphonse – not a very satisfactory way of handling things but it happened to us once when the third horse in our trifecta was fourth over the line and the jockey on the 3rd suspended but not the horse so they paid out on the "over the line" and two days later reversed the 3rd and 4th placings but that didn't help our trifecta and the winner had been a 100/1 shot! Any time we need to produce tears we just think back to that time!
