For many, it’s the best way to kick off the new year, a day at the races and enjoying the picturesque track and surroundings at the Longford course.
With its picnic-type casual atmosphere, it's a great way to welcome the new year after a night of celebrations.
Dating back to 1845, the Longford Cup meeting has become time-honoured and iconic with racing and the general public alike.
The cup itself has a rich history. It's been won by many a champion horse, trainer and jockey. Last year, it was the seemingly ageless Sir Simon who, as an 11-year-old, will be back to defend his title.
If he succeeds, Sir Simon will take his stake earnings past $400,000.
As it stands, he has raced 55 times for 16 wins and 16 placings and $390,000 in prize money.
Sir Simon is the top weight and highest-rated horse in the field and has been allocated 59kg, but that will be reduced with the claim for apprentice Rocky Morimoto, who gets the chance to land his biggest win in a limited riding career.
Morimoto is apprenticed to Sir Simon's trainer, John Keys; the 27-year-old has ridden three winners from limited opportunities.
The Cup, run over 1800m worth $35,000 in prize money, has drawn together a strong field, including Swoop Dog, who won the race two years ago before going on to win the Devonport Cup and WFA Summer Cup at his next two starts.
Longford-based John Blacker, who won the Tasmanian trainers premiership last season, will be represented by three starters, Swoop Dog, Zulu Angel and Blonde Suspect.
Another interesting race on the card is the BM68 800m dash, the only race of its type in Tasmania.
Seven fliers have accepted for the half-mile one-turn sprint which has only recently been introduced to the program.
The first race is scheduled for the respectable time of 12:55; the Cup is the second last on the eight-race card at 16:48.
Although it can be wise to follow Longford-trained horses on their home track, I've made the Hobart-trained Gingerson in race four the best of the day. It was a top effort when third last start and should get a perfect run from the inside gate over 1400m.
