Kent happy with Absolutely

3 minute read

Trainer Mick Kent is enthusiastic about Absolutely's Brisbane Cup chances if the Oaks winner has conditions to suit in the 2400m Group Two race.

Group One winner Absolutely has convinced trainer Mick Kent - albeit with a major proviso - she is a serious Brisbane Cup contender.

Kent will press on to the Group Two Brisbane Cup with Absolutely after the mare pleased him with her performance in the Premier's Cup at Doomben at the weekend.

The Redoute's Choice four-year-old ran sixth to Fantastic Blue in the Group Three 2200m event.

"She had a tough run and hadn't raced for five or six weeks and the effort told over the last 50 metres," Kent said.

Kent said the good track at Eagle Farm on Saturday didn't help Absolutely who won the 2011 Group One Australian Oaks (2400m) at Randwick on a heavy surface.

"The going was pretty quick but she came through it all right and she'll go on to the Brisbane Cup now," Kent said.

"But I'm a bit resigned to not running her again (in Queensland over the winter) unless there is some give in the ground."

Kent is again looking at setting Absolutely for the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) in October, a race she finished 11th in behind Southern Speed last year.

The $300,000 Brisbane Cup (2400m) is at Eagle Farm on Saturday week.

The Cranbourne trainer has cancelled plans to take Domesky to Queensland for a winter campaign after he finished last at Caulfield on Saturday.

"He pulled up with a lot of mucous in his windpipe so I'll give him some treatment and give him a short break for a couple of weeks," Kent said.

"I'll bring him back for the late winter, early spring because he likes soft ground," Kent said.

The Domesday four-year-old, who was runner-up to Dance With Her in the Warrnambool Cup (2350m) early this month, was sent out at $4.40 but failed to beat a runner home in the eight-horse field behind Montgomery over 2400m.

The gelding won the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) last spring and as a three-year-old was successful in the Group Two Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley.
