SCONE: Griffith Eyes Off Tamworth Cup

3 minute read

The Luke Griffith-trained Star of Dubai will be on trial for a start in the $65,000 Tamworth Cup at Armidale on Monday.

The in-form five-year-old gelding lines up over 1400m with Leanne Henry in the saddle seeking his fourth win from his last six starts.

“If he can hold his good form, I’ll look at starting him in the Tamworth Cup,” Griffith said. “It looks a nice race for him as he should get in with a pretty good weight.”

The $60,000 Tamworth Cup (1400m) will be run on April 28.

Star Of Dubai has struck a purple patch of form this campaign, his past five starts yielding three wins and two close seconds.

He won easily over 1600m at Tamworth on April 2 to take his overall record to seven wins and 11 placings from 23 starts.

“The horse is thriving,” Griffith said.

“Early on he was very immature. He’s a big lean thing that used to be a finicky eater.

"You could only give him a couple of runs and he just wouldn’t handle it.

“You had to space his runs. He always showed ability but just needed time to mature.

“He’s a tough horse now. The 12 months he had off probably did him the world of good.”

In February 2011 after a run at Walcha, Star Of Dubai was found to have filling in his near side front leg.

He had suffered a tendon tear and was out of racing for more than 12 months.

Griffith said he had kept Star OF Dubai fresh since his last start win.

“He’s coming back from 1600 metres and we’ve just kept him ticking over,” Griffith added.

“He’s had one decent gallop. I’m happy with him.
