The eight-year-old gelding, who has not won a race since May last year, led from start to finish and proved too strong for Westsouthwest who has shown good ability over the obstacles in his short career.

Westsouthwest was well back in second place with another debutante Budai a long way back in third.

Montgomery, who is trained by Colin & Cindy Alderson had trialled twice over the jumps, winning his mot recently by 15L at Traralgon and looks set for bigger things to come.

“It was great to get it out of the way,” said Cindy Alderson.

“He just loves it, he loves jumping and its great to see him finally do it on raceday,” she added.

“We came here thinking we will head to the Australian Hurdle in a few weeks and I say we will continue on that way on what he produced today.
