Bound For Earth Pips Guelph

3 minute read

It was a close run affair but Bound For Earth won the $175,000, Group 2 Coolmore Furious Stakes at Randwick on Saturday, but not until after jockey Nicholas Hall had mistook the finish line and momentarily stopped riding the John O’Shea trained filly.

It was just 25 metres before the line with Hall in a torrid finish burst with Thump inside him and $1.70 favourite Guelph outside and challenging hard.

Hall quickly realised his mistake and had sufficient room to start vigorous riding again over the final strides to keep Guelph at bay. However, Racing NSW stewards’ fined Hall $1000 after his guilty plea for not riding Bound For Earth out.

Guelph had followed Bound For Earth from the top of the straight from the rear of the field while Thump had taken the lead with 250m to run. There was a 3L margin back to Bound For Earth and Guelph, but both showed a good turn of foot to chase the leader.

Guelph looked as if she would get the better of Bound For Earth but her run just peaked over the final strides as both she and Bound For Earth went past Thump and the inside filly held on.

“She had no luck in Brisbane and she has been ticking nicely and trialled her well last Friday so we were hoping she would run well her today,” said O’Shea.

“She has just been a delight all along and it is great for Kevin and the Maloney family and the Segenhoe group, it was a nice win.

“It is great to be back on a good surface and it is a good day. I think when she gets to a mile she will at her best. She and Guelph are obviously going to battles over the next month or so. Both fillies have improvement so it will be interesting over the next month or so."

“No surprise here, John really liked this horse and there is some improvement,” said Hall.

“She dug deep and I think she will come on from that so there is something to look forward to for sure."

Bound For Earth is another winner by the ill-fated freshman champion sire Northern Meteor out of the Belong To Me mare Bulla Borghese.

This was just her fourth start and her second win.
