Heaven Shows Plenty Of Spirit At Sandown

3 minute read

Spirit Of Heaven had to find plenty but she managed to claw over the top of her rivals to land a second Sandown success.

The Peter Moody-trained filly was an impressive Sandown winner on debut back in June 2013 and while she has been out of the winners circle she has continued to show promise which she delivered on today.

Two good runs in the spring suggested that there was plenty more in store for Spirit Of Heaven, a 3/4 sister to Lights Of Heaven, and her Moonee Valley return last time had her ready to deliver.

She settled back off the speed today, and didn't look to be travelling as well as she might as they balanced up, but she was soon picking up strongly to collar her rivals and win well on the line.

Jockey Damien Thornton was full of praise for the filly who he felt would be better on firmer footing.

"She's done a super job to win," Thornton said.

"She really only just got through [the soft ground] so it was a very good win.

Spirit Of Heaven looks sure to be well suited going to 1400m and beyond in the weeks ahead.

The Peter Moody-trained filly Spirit Of Heaven recorded her second win in seven starts running on from last in the ten-horse field to score a narrow but good win. She was ridden patiently and remained at the tail of the field before improving, wide with cover, rounding the home turn. She put in a good run in the centre of the track to take a narrow lead at the 100m and then battled well to score by a short head. Paddy’s Gem was eighth, one off the rails, switched wide on straightening, challenged strongly at the 200m and kept fighting for a close second. Must Be Mink was midfield and wide without cover. She moved up (still wide) coming to the turn, took a narrow lead at the 150m and then battled on well for third (beaten one length) after a wide trip. *ANZ
