2015 Emirates Stakes: Weir Can Strike Again

3 minute read

Weir will saddle up topweight Lucky Hussler along with the mare May’s Dream in a full field of 16 runners for the $1million handicap over 1600 metres.

Lucky Hussler fared well at the barrier draw coming with gate three but May’s Dream will jump from the outside stall.

The winning trainer of the other big spring cup, Caulfield Cup victor Murray Baker, is also represented with Turn Me Loose from gate 11 with Kerrin McEvoy replacing the suspended Opie Bosson.

The Emirates field is boosted with two international runners, Cox Plate failure Arod for Peter Chapple-Hyam and luckless Mackinnon Stakes fourth-placegetter Magic Artist for Andreas Wohler.

Another of the week’s Group 1 winners, Myer Stakes victor Politeness, drew gate eight for Robert Smerdon and Craig Newitt while another Derby Day winner, Disposition is also line to back up from gate nine.

Chris Waller is the only other trainer with dual runners with Moriarty in one and Amovatio in seven.

Turn Me Loose maintained his unbeaten Australian preparation, now winning three of his four starts, with another strong front-running performance. He was smartly away, soon crossed to the front and then ran along at a good tempo (first 1000m 59.87). He was challenged a number of times in the straight but fought back courageously for a narrow but very impressive win. Politeness was ridden patiently and settled well back in third last place on the rails in the 15-horse field. She improved between runners on straightening, got to eighth at the 200m, challenged strongly at the 100m and fought well for a very good second, just finding the winner (whom conceded her 3.5kg) a bit too good. Rock Sturdy was sixth, between runners, got into clear running at the 300m and kept responding to riding, running on well for a close-up third. Magic Artist was 11th (between runners), switched towards the inner (under riding) at the 200m and kept fighting well for a good (1.3 lengths) fourth. He Or She was last coming to the home turn and caught the eye with his late-closing (2.6 lengths) fifth. Lucky Hussler had a nice trip from his good barrier (3) in fifth place on the rails. He looked a real threat when he gained an inside run to challenge at the 200m but then battled a bit under his top weight (58kg) for a very sound sixth. Of the others: equal favourites Disposition, was a handy fourth to the home turn but just battled on for (3.9 lengths) eighth, while Bow Creek was ninth (wide with cover) and also disappointed, tiring for (7.1 lengths) 12th.
