The David Hayes and Tom Dabernig-trained Rampage narrowly defeated Brent Stanley’s Giroux in the John Paraskeva Plate over 1000 metres, prompting both stables to set sights on bigger goals.

All American colt Rampage finishing strongly to win at his debut outing and he will head to Sydney for the Inglis Nursery (1000m) at Randwick on December 12.

The sales restricted race carries $500,000 in prizemoney and is also the target for Saturday’s Rosehill winner Rafha’s Choice.

Sepoy filly Giroux was also having her first start on Saturday and is expected to have one more run before heading to the Magic Millions Classic on the Gold Coast on January 9.

Giroux’s mother Paprika was runner-up in the Magic Millions Classic in 2009.

Rampage put up a good effort to win on debut. He was smartly away but was caught three wide without cover outside the leading duo (Giroux and Monajet). He moved up well on straightening, challenged strongly at the 100m and finished a bit too well for a narrow but impressive win. Giroux began quickly and retained the lead from her inside barrier (1), being pressured in the mid-stages. She got a bit of a break on turning for home and was only headed in the closing stages for a bold second on debut. Legerity was sixth, between runners, angled into clear running shortly after straightening and fought well for a sound third, also on debut. Vegas Strip settled in last place in the ten-horse field and went wide approaching the home turn. She then kept running on well for a promising (2.5 lengths) fourth. Favourite Theanswermyfriend went back from his wide barrier (9), settled near the tail of the field on the rails and made late ground in the centre when finally clear in the straight to finish (2.6 lengths) fifth.
