Promising colt King’s Troop is likely to run in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes At Gosford next month in preference to the Magic Millions.
The three-year-old resumes over 1000 metres at Randwick on Boxing Day but trainer Gerald Ryan has had a rethink about his imminent aims.
Ryan had been aiming King’s Troop at the Magic Millions Sprint next month but said the colt was unlikely to have sufficient prizemoney to earn a place in the field.
He said the Takeover Target Stakes over 1200 metres on January 8 was a more likely aim for the colt if he missed a run on the Gold Coast.
King’s Troop made a good impression in the spring, winning by a big margin at Warwick farm before finishing second to subsequent Group 1 winner Japonisme in the San Domenico Stakes at just his third start
Ryan said King’s Troop was still not a big horse but had grown since his spring preparation.
“Originally we thought he might have just been a speed horse but the way he has gotten into his work it looks he may be able to run a bit of a journey,” Ryan said.
“I think he is a nice horse.”
Ryan said King’s Troop had a potential stallion’s pedigree so hoped to add a black type win to the colt’s record.
