Top Sydney Stables Vie For Tasmanian Oaks

Leading Sydney trainers Chris Waller and Gai Waterhouse will saddle up two of the top chances in Sunday’s Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) at Launceston.

Waller will run last start Tasmanian stakes winner Sebring Sally while Waterhouse is sending Sweet Redemption south off a Sydney win at her most recent outing.

Sebring Sally will be out complete Tasmania’s feature three-year-old fillies’ double after a strong victory in the Listed Strutt Stakes (2100m) at Hobart.

Damien Oliver was aboard in the Strutt but Ben Melham will take over on Sunday, the filly coming up with gate nine in the field of 15 plus one emergency.

Snitzel filly Sweet Redemption is stepping up quickly to the Oaks journey but comes into the race with good form, winning two of her last three outings.

She scored a dominant win at Canterbury over 1550m last time and Noel Callow takes the ride.

Robert Smerdon’s Chabaud also comes in as a last-start winner after a 2040m victory at Moonee Valley so is one who holds no distance fears.

Mark Zahra will continue his association with Chabaud after riding her in her valley win.

The Strutt Stakes provides the primary form reference for the Oaks with placegetters Gee Gees Top Notch (Sigrid Carr) and All That I Know (Regan Bayliss) also lining up.

Robert Smerdon-trained filly Chabaud put up a really good effort in winning. She was eased from her outside barrier (15) and settled a distant last in the 15-horse field. She improved (wide out) from the 800m, challenged strongly (widest of all) rounding the home turn, hit the front at the 200m and then went on to score quite comfortably in a most impressive staying performance. Sweet Redemption, from the Gai Waterhouse stable, settled nicely from her good barrier (3) in fourth place on the rails, got into clear running on turning for home and fought well for a good second, having no chance with the winner. Electric Aura had a nice trip in third place, moved up nearing the nearing the home turn, challenged on straightening and then battled well to hold the minor placing.
