Trainer Darren Weir has found an unexpected Victorian target for his high class three-year-old Cliff’s Edge.
Weir has sent Cliff’s Edge back to Victoria after giving the Group 2 winner just one start at the Sydney carnival in the Rosehill Guineas.
Cliff’s Edge won the G2 Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley on March 16 before heading to Sydney to finish fifth behind D’Argento in last week’s G1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).The winner of six of his 15 starts held entries for the Doncaster Mile, ATC Australian Derby and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the Sydney carnival.
Weir has decided to keep Cliff’s Edge in work for the $300,000 VOBIS Sires, a feature race over 1600m for three-year-olds at Caulfield on the rich VOBIS Gold program on April 21.Cliff’s Edge is eleigible for the VOBIS Sires as he is a Victorian-bred son of Canford Cliffs.
Meanwhile one of Queensland’s rising stars has been ruled out of the Sydney carnival after suffering a setback. The Steve Tregea-trained four-year-old Niccanova has suffered a splint bone injury and wil be sidelined for up to six weeks.
Tregea had planned to send Niccanova to Sydney for last Saturday’s Doncaster Prelude at Rosehill after his recent first-up win at Doomben that tok his record to five wins from only seven starts.Niccanova had been of the scene since last winter when he won the G3 Fred Best Classic and was third in the G2 Queensland Guineas.
His recent setback also rules the four-year-old out of feature races at the Brisbane carnival in May and June.
