Bellevue Hill will back up into the Sires next week for Tulloch Lodge.

Winning Trainer: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott

On the win: “We were really confident with the horse. The conditions were the concern today but he seemed to relish them once he begun well and he looked to travel well throughout. He gave a good kick on that ground so I would be confident with him going forward.”

On the ride: “Tim got him into a lovely rhythm, I know there was a little bit of pressure there but he got some good sectionals and he seemed nice and relaxed throughout.”

On his next run: “Very keen (to back up in the Sires). That was the plan coming into today, we wanted to see a strong performance like that to top him off for the Sires. He’s a fit horse and noe we’ve seen today he is versatile in all conditions.”

Winning Jockey: Tim Clark

On the winner: “He’s a really nice colt. The last six weeks he’s just kept improving every gallop he’s had. Genuinely thought when I galloped him Tuesday week ago that if he made the Golden Slipper he’d be very hard to beat. He didn’t get in but came here today, he’s had the 1400m run now. Probably didn’t love the ground but he got through it, his class got him through it.”

On the track: “It’s saturated obviously with the amount of rain we’ve had. No fault of anyone, it’s just the way it is. The track’s in great condition but it’s just unfortunate the amount of rain we’ve had. It’s going to be a real slog for them.”

Beaten Jockeys:

Kerrin McEvoy (Strasbourg): “He stayed on well but found the ground hard work.”

James McDonald (La Tene): “She went okay on unsuitable ground and a tough run.”

Blake Shinn (Rome): “He is a nice horse but he just never handled the conditions. It is testing out there today and it didn’t suit my horse but stick with him.”

Brett Prebble (Fortress Command): “He is very raw, very new and very green. There is plenty of upside.”

Corey Brown (Autocratic): “He ran really well. He worked to the line well.”

Christian Reith (Dawn Too Good): “He was just a little bit keen today and it told in the result.”

Andrew Adkins (Chabrol): “He just wanted to travel a little bit keen over that distance on a heavy track and it just took a toll on him late.”

Tommy Berry (Persan): “He’s a lovely horse but this has probably come a prep too early for him.”

Craig Williams (Seporto): “He showed significant improvement today. He handled the track conditions. He is a lovely, big strong horse. When he comes back as a three-year-old it will be a proper way to assess him. There are a lot more options for staying horses when they turn three. He has to improve but he’s got a little there to improve on.”

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt Bellevue Hill advanced to 1400m here at his third start to score a very good win. Racing on a heavy 10 track for the first time, he went to the front, was pressured in the mid-stages but was not seriously threatened in the straight to score by two lengths. Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Strasbourg had a nice trip in fifth place on the rails, got through to be second halfway down the straight and kept fighting well to hold that position at the post. Fortress Command was back in eighth place, got between runners at the 200m and then made good ground to take third. Fortress Command was slowly away, settled back in seventh place on the rails, got along the inner on turning for home and then kept battling on well for (3.5 lengths) fourth.
