Saxon Mist will take winning form to the spelling paddock following her last-stride victory in the Bill Ryan Maiden-C1 over 1600m.
The Tanya Hanson-trained three-year-old filly was second at her previous two starts and beaten in photo-finishes both times, but on Wednesday night it was her turn to get the desired result.
"This filly has really come on these past few starts, and she thoroughly deserved this win," Hanson said.
The daughter of Americain was ridden by Anthony Darmanin who said the win was deserving and suggested she had a bright future.
"Her recent form has turned around and tonight she was always traveling like the winner, and she hit the line strong," Darmanin said.
Saxon Mist has had only six starts for a win and three minor placings for almost $25,000 in stakes.
She is raced by Gary Richards and a large group of friends of which some are first-time owners.
"This filly is a bit special to me because I had some new clients who were keen to get into a horse, but things went poorly early in her preparation and it took a lot of care and patience to get her to the races," Richards said.
"Then she was a bit unlucky in a couple starts being beaten in tight photo finishes and even this win emanated from a close photo-finish.
"I got a bit excited and let rip a big roar when she won, but that's what happens when you are passionate about the industry, and you won't find many more passionate than me."
