Group 1 Goodwood winning trainer Jason Warren has his sights on the Adelaide Cup at Morphettville in March with Grand Pierro after they claimed Wednesday’s Listed Bagot Handicap at Flemington.
Warren claimed last year's Adelaide sprint feature with Benedetta and will now chase SA's premier staying feature with the five-year-old, who recorded his fourth win from just 27 starts with Zac Spain in the saddle.
Grand Pierro was placed behind Glantaneous and Amade in last year's Bagot before campaigning in Tasmania, where he ran third in both the Hobart and Launceston Cups.
He was in the market in last year's Group 2 Adelaide Cup (feature picture) before finishing last behind Excelleration, where he suffered a minor laceration in the run.
Now qualified for the Melbourne Cup, Warren will focus on getting Grand Pierro to run a strong two-mile trip in Adelaide.
"We'd like to take him to Adelaide and see how well he runs the 3200m when we prepare him for the race
"I think we'll be freshening (up) and heading towards Adelaide,'' he said.
