Miss on Song in Guineas

3 minute read

Moorlands Miss is now likely to tackle more of the summer riches for three-year-olds after an impressive win in the $125,000 Listed Ladbrokes Tasmanian Guineas (1600m) in Hobart on Friday.

Moorlands Miss was three wide for much of the trip but was still too strong for Magnaprime, who has been runner-up in three feature races in a row; the favourite Azonto was well back around the turn but ran home on fairly into third spot.

"I said to Codi (Jordan) have a crack, we always wanted to ride her quiet but then it became very ugly, three wide, it was a "Jordo" ugly ride that got the money," trainer Glenn Stevenson said.

"We've always had an opinion of this horse. We went from the 1200m to the mile at Devonport and went away very happy that day, and we were confident she would run a good race today."

"She has got no clue what she is doing; she has got so much improvement. She has come a really long way, but with the path that we want to follow, that's a really good win," Jordan added.

Moorlands Miss has raced just four times for two wins and a placing; her prizemoney leapt from $19,000 to $94,000 with Friday's win.

Nothing Zany about this girl

Although there were a few anxious moments, smart two-year-old Zany Girl made it two-from-two taking out the $50,000 Alexandra Plate (1000m).

Zany Girl ($1.35) jumped in the air when the starter said go and was last early before quickly racing into fourth place by the 600m mark and after chasing hard, Zany Girl grabbed the lead in the shadows of the post to beat her stablemate Geegees Missile ($7.50) with Celestial Glow ($23) finishing third.

"To her credit, she's such a true professional. She just wasn't ready, she leant back when they opened the gates and half went in the air and she was probably a length slow away but then we got into a lovely position, she travelled like the winner but when I came into the straight I didn't think she was going to find that extra length, but this horse is tough and knows how to win," rider Anthony Darmanin said.

A $65,000 purchase at the 2024 Tasmanian Magic Millions Yearling Sale, Zany Girl is by Needs Further x Isn't Life Strange and has banked a little more than $70,000 from her two wins.

Gandy made it two for the day when Alpine Thunder ($9) proved a little too strong despite racing greenly in the 1100m Class 1 Hcp.

In a race dominated by on speed runners, Alpine Thunder got away in the last 100m to beat Private Storm (8.50) and Highland Duel ($4.50).

"Mehmet (Ulucinar) has done a great job on him; he's a horse that is coming to it, and he's got a heap of ability. We will see where he goes after this, but he will be a much better horse next prep," Gandy said.
