Sydney Specials: Rosehill – March 12

3 minute read

Godolphin take a team of 12 to Rosehill on Saturday where two at each way odds in the features have strong appeal.

Two of these 12 runners contest the Group 1 Coolmore Classic in the form of Ghisoni and Pearls.

Ghisoni appears to be on the cusp of making history by winning the Coolmore Classic at just her fourth career start which follows a clinical success in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) at Randwick a fortnight ago.

The soft first up success came after a setback saw the filly missing a planned first up outing in the Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m).

The daughter of Lonhro now takes on the older mares for the first time in Saturday’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).

While facing noticeably stronger company than she did first up, Ghisoni carries 50kg and no deadweight with Corey Brown returning home from Singapore to partner the imposing filly.

Brown currently leads the Singapore Jockey Premiership with 52 winners at a strike rate of near 20%.

He picks up the mount on a push button filly who should work across and settle outside the anticipated leader in Solicit.

From that prominent position, the imposing three-year-old could take some beating over the concluding stages.

In the next event on the program, stablemate Generalife can bounce back from a luckless last start outing when contesting the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m).

The gelding never got clear when fourth in the Liverpool City Cup, beaten 1.2 lengths behind Charlie Boy.

Rivals here in the form of Rock Sturdy and Good Project finished ahead of Generalife with more favourable runs on that occasion but now meet John O’Shea’s runner half a kilo worse at the weights.

While some query out to the 1500m, negating that is Generalife’s excellent course record having won four of his seven visits to Rosehill.

With even luck the six-year-old should be prominent at the business end of proceedings.

Peeping was smartly away from barrier nine and Sam Clipperton got her across well to settle in fifth place one off the rails. She switched out on straightening, sprinted quickly to take the lead at the 50m and then fought back gamely for a really good win, her first at Group One level. Azkadellia was seventh, one off the rails, tracking the eventual winner. She fanned deep at the 300m, challenged at the 50m and fought well for a good second. Solicit went to the front as usual, set a solid tempo and then battled back strongly when challenged in the straight for a good third. Top weight (58kg) Lucia Valentina settled well back in tenth place, she improved (under riding) on straightening, switched deep at the 200m and then ran on strongly for a late-closing (1.6 lengths) fourth in an impressive firstup effort. Zanbagh was smartly away from her inside barrier (1), had a good trip in fifth place and fought on well in the straight, putting up a very honest performance in finishing (2.1 lengths) fifth. Previously unbeaten filly Ghisoni was quickly away, raced outside the leader (Solicit) at a solid tempo, and weakened after racing on the pace to the 200m to finish (2.4 lengths) sixth, in a most creditable effort in this Group One class.
