Singapore Racing - Weekend Review - 9th and 11th of January

3 minute read

Leading trainer Laurie Laxon enjoyed a very fruitful weekend, collecting five winners from just 10 starters, headed by the talented Rathausglockel.

Improving filly Mexican Gal brought up Laxon's first victory of the weekend, after she made easy work of her rivals on Friday night.

Stepping out for just her eighth start, the daughter of Encosta De Lago easily justified her short quote, when saluting by three lengths.

Ridden by Manoel Nunes, Mexican Gal pressed forward to settle just off the speed in third.

Travelling strongly on straightening, Mexican Gal quickly ambled up to the leaders, before streaking clear to notch up an easy victory.

Improving eight pounds on her previous best, Mexican Gal possess quite the handy record, placing in all bar two of her career starts.

She has been beaten narrowly twice and the form through Spanish Bay is also quite strong.

The overall time helped give a good push for the strength of the performance —comparatively Mexican Gal recorded easily the quickest time of the night.

Following the event, Laxon indicated he would like to target the Group 3 CECF Singapore Classic for her next start.

While at this stage, it is unknown as to what the make up of the field will be, if she does take her place, Mexican Gal is required to make sharp improvement.

Using Timeform ratings, Mexican Gal currently sits well below an average Group 3 winning figure.

However, if placed against similar opposition at her next start, she appears a strong winning prospect, as we expect Mexican Gal to improve between three and six pounds.

Rathausglockel

Progressive galloper Rathausglockel stole the show on Sunday afternoon, when bringing up a hat-trick of wins in the fifth event.

Having created quite the impression at his first two starts, the son of Pins was well supported to keep his winning run intact, when making the sharp step up to Bm 67 company.

Jumping away fairly, Rathausglockel settled fifth along the rail, under regular rider Manoel Nunes.

Kept to the inside on straightening, Rathausglockel took a while to find his stride, before really hitting the line strongly, drawing clear inside the 200m and racing away for another dominant win.

Eased down over the concluding stages, Rathausglockel saluted by three lengths and recorded the second quickest time of the night.

Comparatively, only the Michael Freedman trained Bellwether recorded a faster time, and it was only by the barest of margins (0.07 seconds).

Notably, Rathausglockel recorded a faster last 400m than both Bellwether and Raise No Doubt, averaging 11.25 second 200m sections.

Using Timeform ratings, Rathausglockel improved 13 pounds on his previous start and has now improved close to 20 pounds since his debut victory in November last year.

The fact he was able to win by another significant margin, suggests he will springboard off this mark and is clearly a galloper heading in the right direction.

Out of the Zabeel mare Stanica, Rathausglockel is a full-brother to the Michael Moroney trained Rhythm To Spare.

A winner of six of his 21 career starts, Rhythm To Spare finished fourth in the Group 1 Queensland Derby and is Group 3 winner over a mile (R A Lee Stakes).

As a result, Rathausglockel is expected to get out over further and isn't likely to be limited to the sprint trips.

The manner in which he has won his first three starts gives the impression of a very promising horse, and he looks to have plenty more to give.

Bellwether

The Michael Freedman trained Bellwether and the Leticia Dragon trained Raise No Doubt are also gallopers worth following out of Sunday's meeting.

The former collected his first victory first up, as he had failed to fill the placings fresh in the past.

Using Timeform ratings, Bellwether returned a performance six pounds clear of his previous best and is proven to improve with racing.

The four-year-old appears to have come back stonger this time in, and looks set for a good preparation, in just his second under Freedman's care.

Raise No Doubt

Raise No Doubt failed to salute as favourite, however his performance still held plenty of merit, and he should improve further when stepped up in trip.

His best form has previously been achieved over 1200m and if placed in similar company, he should prove very hard to beat.

A return to the turf track could also aid his chances further.
