2015 Speight’s Ale Gt Easter Stakes Listed May 2 - Riccarton Park

3 minute read

Sucre wins 2015 Speight’s Ale Gt Easter Stakes Listed NZ$50,000 at Riccarton Park (NZ), 1400m.

Sucre travelled nicely, about seventh (between runners) before taking a split to take the lead at the 300m. He then fought gamely, holding off several challengers to score a narrow but good win.

Overtheriver was midfield to the home turn. He got a split to challenge strongly at the 200m and then fought well for a good second.

Toma Valea was towards the rear to the home turn. He got through in the centre at the 200m, joined in at the 100m and fought well for a close-up third.

This was a solidly enough run Listed event over 1400m for the prevailing Dead5 track conditions with Sucre scoring in 1:24.08 narrowly. The mare was winning her first race at Riccarton after eight starts and while she has several stakes placings here it was a blacktype victory that had proved elusive until now. She came from worse than midfield early and won the race for rider Darryl Bradley when he saved ground the inside and improved many positions across the top before taking the front at the 300m. She held on narrowly from a strong closing Overtheriver that has improved substantially since coming to the powerful Kevin Myers stable. Toma Valea ran on well for third after being last away and was beaten just a head and a nose to make it a very tight photo between the top three. Nashville ran a sound race for fourth and races well down here while The Knight was respectable and Hexie Hao looked a next upper. Forgive the mare Angelica Hall as she came home down the outer widest after having to be checked forcibly by her rider when in bother after just 300m. Homeland, Absolute Excelencia and King Montrose were not disgraced with the first two names battling on okay from the back and the latter was thereabouts throughout. The Diamond One was the big flop when stopping after leading up but can be forgiven as it was a simply poor tactical ride supported one hundred percent by the facts. The mare has never ever won (remember she has won seven of her nineteen starts so has a decent win conversion) when leading and is a sit and pounce type best suited with cover or getting one shot at them late.
