Warm favourite, Ryan Mark bounced out keenly from barrier 11 and although wide, kept the leaders in sight. He found cover before the turn but pulled wide before they straightened. Given a couple of slaps at the 200m, he edged up to the leader and maintained his pace to grab and hold the lead until they hit the line for a narrow but somewhat convincing and deserved win.

Scapolo tracked Ryan Mark into the straight but had to go wider for a run, finishing strongly to edge Procurement in the last stride but too late to catch the winner.

Procurement sat outside the leader, Tomorrowland, around the corner and took over soon after they straightened but was not able to withstand Ryan Mark’s and Scapolo’s challenges yet never giving in either, for a solid third. After leading from the jump, Tomorrowland led upon turning and held on for (2.2 lengths) fourth.

Lochinver Station Arawa Stakes (G3)

Type: OPEN

This G3 at WFA over 1215m was a win tinged with great sadness for trainer John Morell but Ryan Mark did him, his late mother and his family proud. Morell the night before had lost his mother Floss, an ardent fan of Ryan Mark, so he showed great character to still come to the races, saddle up his charge and get a result. Ryan Mark deserved a win after going colossal two runs ago when second at G1 under WFA after a wide trip then last time out got throttled in the lead and finished a brave third. He was trapped wide again today but midfield and surged into the race turning for home before his quality saw him grab the lead 50m out. It will be the most remembered win of his career for obvious reasons and was victory seven from just thirteen starts so the 5yo gelding has been a project of both patience and pride for Morell. The winning time of 1:09.73 was fast as nothing else all day broke 1:11 plus factor in all races at the trip today were 1215m owing to concern about space to pull up mounts after the race. Scapolo came with a thunderous late run for second after being hemmed up eighth and he is in for another fine campaign. Procurement ran a super third after sitting outside the pace and this mare will not be hard to place over the rest of spring and summer either at handicap level or against her own sex. Tomorrowland the leader was run over the final 100m into fourth and should be a big spring player this summer again in New Zealand. Fascination Street was an eyecatcher the closing stages one-off having been seventh the inside for most of the race. Silver Eclipse was a brave sixth after being wide and working throughout third and if it has not flattened her then she too is set to tackle the major sprints over the next three or four months. Queens Rose looked a next upper the way she found the line late. Shelford disappointed so maybe WFA is not his go or more likely it could be directionally, as clockwise does look his best performing way. Riding Shotgun was okay late after being wide in the rear trio but Whosyourmaster was poor for his record. He apparently struck himself in the running so warrants forgiveness. Ryan Mark can win any sprint he is set for this campaign and his trainer now will be concentrating on breaking that Ellerslie hoodoo come New Years Day. So many other good runs apart from the winner out of this race that does look like a serious form guide for the next few months at least as it was a seriously run WFA sprint.
