Singapore Racing - Weekend Review - 22nd and 24th of January

3 minute read

There were a few key performances in Singapore over the weekend, one of which was the Alvin Tan trained Infantry on Friday night.

Ridden by Elione Chaves, the son of Tavistock followed up on his impressive maiden win two back when simply too good for his rivals in the final event.

While many were of the opinion he may be looking for further, Infantry still proved quite sharp over the 1200m journey returning time figures ahead of the bare form.

Infantry

Lining up against the older horses, Infantry was allotted a fairly hefty weight (56kg), but still was too smart.

Drawn awkwardly, Infantry was forced to sit three-wide throughout, but always travelled well under Chaves.

Under riding passing the 500m, Infantry ranged up to the lead inside the 200m before asserting his dominance over the concluding stages.

While the winning margin was only narrow, he improved 10 pounds on his maiden win and is clearly heading in the right direction.

Being by Tavistock he is expected to improve further over more ground, the fact he is able to win over these shorter trips is a great sign moving forward.

From the family of the Group 1 placed Beat The Fade (finished second to Sunline in the 2000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic) he has a bit of quality about him and is definitely one to place in your blackbook.

Likely to be tried over 1400m at his next outing he creates plenty of interest in his bid to notch up the hat-trick.

If able to continue his progression, he should acquit himself and prove very hard to beat if placed in suitable company.

Majestic Moments

The Patrick Shaw trained Majestic Moments also impressed on Friday night when too strong in the third event.

A winner of six of his 19 starts, Majestic Moments appreciated the drop back in trip when justifying his solid market support.

Successful in returning a new career peak, Majestic Moments has continued to race well and is a real credit to the Patrick Shaw stable.

Since February last year his longest break between runs has been 56 days and in that period his performance ratings have waivered little.

Only on three occasions has he missed the minor placings, one of which came behind Stepitup in the Group 1 Raffles Cup [1800m].

His latest performance suggests he still has further improvement to come and is definitely one to stick with.

Affleck

Out of the same event, the Laurie Laxon trained Affleck appeared back on track and while unable to really threaten Majestic Moments, he reportedly returned lame near-hind.

Expected to be at his best when seen up to a mile and possibly beyond, he is also one to follow as his performance in winning last year's Group 1 Singapore Guineas [1600m]leaves him open to further improvement.

Poseidon

On Sunday evening the Cliff Brown trained Poseidon proved most impressive in the final event when making light work of his rivals.

Somewhat plain first up, the son of Gold Centre displayed sharp improvement when relishing the step up to 1400m.

Ridden by Alan Munro, Poseidon was in control a long way from home and duly saluted when racing away to score by two lengths.

Pulled to the centre on straightening he quickly hit the front inside the 300m and showed a good turn of foot to put a good gap on his rivals.

Successful in returning a new career peak, he looks back in great order and remains open to further improvement.

Only seen beyond 1400m once in his career, he gives the impression he will be at his best at a mile, so it will be interesting to see what Brown decides to do in the near future.

In 13 starts he has only missed the money twice and is definitely one you can follow with confidence.
