Arcadia Dream wins 2016 Schweppes-W.A.T.C. Derby Group 2 $400,000 at Ascot (WA) 3yo, 2400m.
The filly Arcadia Dream put up a very good effort in winning. She settled well in eighth place, behind a very moderate early pace. The tempo picked up from the 1000m where she was conceding the leader about ten lengths and she went to the rails rounding the home turn. She switched out at the 300m and then came with a strong late run to grab an impressive win nearing the post. It was a really good staying run and also an excellent ride by William Pike.
Who Dat Singa was back in fifth place, improved to be third approaching the home turn and looked the winner when he dashed clear nearing the 200m and was only caught nearing the post to take a very sound second.
Culverin settled in last place in the 11-horse field and was giving the leader about 12 lengths at the 800m. She got a split at the 300m and then ran on well over the final stages to take a good third.
The favourite Kia Ora Koutou raced well back in the field, was under riding at the 800m after the tempo picked up, fanned deep from the 300m and made late ground, without threatening for (4 lengths) fourth, his chances probably been affected by the steady early pace.
