Zigwig wins 2016 Berkley Stud Champagne Stakes Listed NZ$50,000 at Riccarton Park (NZ) 2yo, 1200m.
Zigwig, from barrier six, jumped fairly and settled midfield, first on the rails and then before the crossing, one off the rails. At the crossing she kept the leaders well in sight and once into the straight waited for racing room which presented itself with a nice split at the 300m. She collared the leader at the 200m then broke clear, running away to win comfortably and impressively and one leg of a stakes double for her young sire Zacinto (Dansili).
Disturbance was last at the crossing and wide but into the straight had bags of room to run through the field, took some time to wind up then ran on well without any chance of catching the winner.
Shirley Maude had three behind her before the crossing and had to make her bid between runners once into the straight where she ran home well, just losing second at the post.
