Zigwig, from barrier six, jumped fairly and settled midfield, first on the rails and then before the crossing, one off the rails. At the crossing she kept the leaders well in sight and once into the straight waited for racing room which presented itself with a nice split at the 300m. She collared the leader at the 200m then broke clear, running away to win comfortably and impressively and one leg of a stakes double for her young sire Zacinto (Dansili).

Disturbance was last at the crossing and wide but into the straight had bags of room to run through the field, took some time to wind up then ran on well without any chance of catching the winner.

Shirley Maude had three behind her before the crossing and had to make her bid between runners once into the straight where she ran home well, just losing second at the post.

Zigwig won this Listed 1200m juvenile event easily and impressively to give her sire Zacinto a red-letter day. A son of Zacinto in Ugo Foscolo had remained unbeaten when winning a Listed event today at Te Rapa and in track record time, so the win by the filly Zigwig was cream on a Stakes cake. Zigwig raced about fifth and when drawn out into clear air her response was a notable surge to lead at the 150m and then draw clear to score by three and a half lengths. It was her first win at just start number three and she was placed in the two prior outings so has that will to compete all trainers and owners like to see in youngsters. The winning time of 1:09.18 was a decent gallop but times on the day were quick and this being a chute race (800m-1200m) they do post bionic times at Riccarton, as they do at Trentham, so you must always factor reality in. Disturbance came home solidly from last on settling to get second on the post while Shirley Maude ran on well from back to finish third. Cobblertothestars ran well on debut for fourth while the favourite What Choux Want after sitting second the outer then taking the lead at the 300m wilted to fifth and was disappointing. Strowan was not too bad once into clear air and Dontpokethetiger was just okay as was Retallick and Primrose the final stages. The pace setter Lady Bullbars stopped badly but was find to be suffering mild lameness post race in the left-hind leg. The winner Zigwig has a good future and she can further embellish her sire next season where the G1 1000 Guineas (1600m) looks the logical Spring target here at Riccarton.
