The Team Hawkes-trained colt Ducimus, who was well supported, followed his impressive win in a Ballarat 2YO Maiden (1100m) on 31 January when racing on debut to score a very promising win here. He showed good pace to share the lead before taking a clear advantage at the 300m. He then veered towards the rails side, racing greenly, but recovered to retain the lead and then lasted to win well. He then survived a protest (from the third placed Sanadaat). He should continue to improve with racing and looks a smart colt.

Taking Aim settled towards the rear of the 11-horse field, was eighth (between runners) at the 400m, got through to fourth at the 200m (racing a bit greenly) and then came with a late run for close second in a really promising effort at his third race start.

Sanadaat raced close up in fifth place, just behind the leaders, went toward the rails side at the 200m, was checked shortly afterwards and then fought on nicely for third. Her rider Craig Williams then protest unsuccessfully against the winner.
