A strong finish for third on debut preceded another solid finish by Xpression in a nice win here. Dropping out to last from the outside barrier (8) jockey Samantha Collett switched to the rail until they reached the crossing then moved the filly out upon making the home straight.

Presented with a lovely gap at the 300m she drove through, levelled up to the leader inside the 200m and gradually asserted herself over the last 100m to win well.

Espumoso led at the crossing, still led at the 200m but could not go with the winner yet held on well enough for second, a half length away.

Bit Lippy raced greenly turning in but settled down to run home well for third from Flaunt It Girl who was doing her best work at the finish, running on for fourth.

Wakefield Challenge Stakes (G2)

Age: 2yo Type: OPEN

This G2 1200m for juveniles only had won race winner in it and was a largely inexperienced field and it saw two runners well ahead of the rest at the line. Xpression was last away and steered straight over to the inside before improving across the junction and was fourth at the 400m ready to unleash. There had been a softening up in the lead so a run on type was always going to be assisted and Xpression really unloaded to lead 100m out. She scored by half a length at her second start and clocked 1:09.13, which sounds slick but chute times at Trentham are notoriously bionic and can never be used or trusted to prove absolutely anything. The 2yo track record here is a thoroughly unbelievable 1:07.24 by Kapsdan in 2004 and it never won another race. Espumoso the unbeaten gelding coming into this was brave in defeat as he got taken on in front and was sitting duck for something out of the pack even after he kicked away at the 200m. This pair were a dominant three lengths or more ahead of the rest. Bit Lippy ran on well for third after getting back into the rear duo and showed it was a run on finish bar the runner up leader. Flaunt It Girl was fourth mostly and then sixty early the run home but kept boxing on for fourth beaten just under five lengths. King Louis cost itself any chance and the runner up by attacking for the lead and eyeballing for way too long and too far from home. He punctured and finished fifth beaten five and a half lengths and may need a riding change or race pattern tactic overhaul as the big tall colt is green and intimidation is not working. King Louis with an inside gate can lead and beat them otherwise he may need gear additions be taught how to race rather than try and bully by baby bulk. Imelda Mary was average but Peaceful on debut can be backed next time out as she was back and wide plus got going the closing stages. Lite My Cigar stopped like all bar the runner up that raced in or near the lead and his chances were stubbed out by the early pressure that remained until across the junction. This is not a G2 race and should be downgraded as it never draws a big field plus much of the form is at this stage of the season yet to be treated as the real deal. Xpression with a closing turn of foot as she showed today has upside for sure and the runner up Espumoso is a nice strong gelding but King Louis and Peaceful could end up as good or better come the Autumn. Espumoso is Karaka Millions bound if he stays happy and healthy with his place in the field assured now due to over 40K now in earnings.
