Man City vs Sevilla betting preview
Pep Guardiola's men will be making their first appearance in the UEFA Super Cup, hoping to pave the way to go one better and record a quadruple in the 2023/24 season.
Since 2006, Sevilla have made six appearances in the UEFA Super Cup. The masters of the Europa League beat Barcelona 3-0 that year but have since lost five straight in the fixture.Despite featuring six times, they've yet to face an English side, losing to Spanish opposition on three occasions, AC Milan and Bayern Munich.
Pep Guardiola has cast doubt on his team's ability to compete on all fronts, saying it will be nearly impossible to compete at such a high level for another season.
That feels like a statement designed to take some pressure off of his team early in the season and there's little doubt they'll see this as a very winnable trophy.
Despite their pedigree, Sevilla struggled in La Liga last season and are as short as 5/1 to be in a relegation battle this term after kicking off with a 2-1 loss at home to Valencia.
They were beaten 4-0 and 3-1 by Manchester City in Champions League group stage meetings last season, although we should acknowledge their form picked up post-World Cup break.
However, there's no real evidence that they can compete with Pep Guardiola's side at this moment in time.
City were comfortable when beating Burnely 3-0 last week and played well in the Community Shield, even if they did fall short on penalties.
They've beaten Sevilla in all six of their previous meetings and last year's demolition of Real Madrid in the Champions League shows they're a cut above Spanish teams at present.
Rico Lewis can fill the John Stones role in his absence while Mateo Kovacic will likely replace De Bruyne in midfield.
They may be lacking in deeper lying creativity, but the partnership being formed by Julian Alvarez and Erling Haaland should mean the prolific Norweigan still receives plenty of service.
Although we anticipate a victory for the English side, Sevilla have much more quality than Burnley and should find a way to score given the absence of Dias and Stones.
