The Eagle Farm Wrap : 25th May 2019

3 minute read

Racing and Sports Form Analyst Alex Steedman provides a Timeform recap of the Kingsford-Smith Stakes Day meeting at Eagle Farm on May 25.

Kiwi Raider The Bostonian maintained his unbeaten record in Australia by taking out the Kingsford-Smith Cup (1300m).

The Bostonian will now look to become the first horse since Thorn Park in 2004 to claim the Kingsford-Smith Cup - Stradbroke Handicap double since Thorn Park in 2004 and the first horse ever to claim all three of Queensland's Group 1 sprint features after resuming with success in the Doomben 10,000.

Connections of Strasbourg are expected to pay the late entry fee for the J.J Atkins Stakes next fortnight after he claimed the Group 2 BRC Sires' Produce Stakes (1400m) while his stablemate Military Zone is surprisingly off to the spelling paddock after an impressive win in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1400m).

The Bostonian followed his first-up victory in the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) on May 11 with another really good effort in recording his second Group 1 success here, his ninth win in all from 16 starts. He was smartly away from his wide barrier (11) before Michael Cahill skilfully eased him to settle in fourth place on the rails, tracking a good tempo. He took a split coming to the 300m, went to the front at the 100m and then went on to win well and remain unbeaten in five Australian starts after an outstanding ride by Cahill. The $151 chance Princess Posh raced in tenth place on the rails, tracked the eventual winner from the 300m and finished off well for second, staging a good effort. The favourite Trekking had a nice trip from his inside barrier (1), racing in seventh place on the rails. He got between runners on straightening and kept running on well for third. Irithea went to the front, set a quick tempo, was only overtaken at the 100m and did very well in holding on for fourth, beaten a length, after running a bold race and at a quick pace. Two-year-old colt Dubious began well from his wide barrier (16), settled in sixth place (three wide with cover). He put in a good run coming to the 200m and then battled on really well for (1.5 lengths) fifth advancing to weight-for-age here.
