Port Macquarie Race Club conducts more than 23 race meetings annually headlined by the Port Macquarie Cup carnival in October. Nearby Wauchope Jockey Club also uses the Port Macquarie racecourse for its annual Wauchope Cup TAB race meeting.
The racing and training facilities at Port Macquarie racecourse include a 1600 metres course proper; 1500 metres sand training track; 1400 metres grass training track; and 110 day stalls. Port Macquarie racecourse is laid out symmetrically and is a near perfect 1600m oval with two 400m straights and two sweeping cambered turns of 400m. The course proper is 18 metres wide. The track rises gradually from the 600m to the 200m before a downhill run to the finish. The course proper underwent a major rebuild at a cost of $3.7 million in 2016 to remedy drainage problems after wet weather. A starting chute that catered for 1400m races was also extended to 1500 metres. The 1200m and 2000m starting points provide long straight runs for the first 450 metres. There is an advantage for horses drawn inside barriers at the 1000m, 1400m and 1500m starts.
