Walcha racecourse, 420 km from Sydney and lying between Tamworth and the NSW north coast, is a popular destination for the Walcha Jockey Club’s annual two-day Walcha Cup carnival in February.
The township of Walcha is 1067 metres above sea level, making Walcha racecourse one of the highest in NSW.Walcha racecourse has is a tight circuit with a circumference of only 1500 metres and a home straight of 300 metres that makes for exciting racing.
There are three starting chutes for races over 1000m, 1200m and 1440m with inside barriers a definite advantage due to turning nature of the track although runners in events over 1000m get a straight run of 800m to the home turn. The 1700m start is in the home straight. The Walcha Cup program has four time-honoured feature races including the Ron Martin Maiden, once the richest maiden race in country NSW.
