The Hunter is a Group 2 race for the sprinters run under Quality conditions at Newcastle conducted by the Newcastle Jockey Club.

The Hunter is run over 1300m. It was first run in 2019 and was won by Savatiano.

The Hunter is the equal richest race run in the provincial region of NSW.

The Hunter was upgraded to Group 2 from 2024.

Mares won the first two editions but then the classy older males came to the fore including Lost And Running who had contested The Everest two runs early.

Savatiano (2019) and Vilana (2022) are half relations and won 2 of the first 4 runnings.

The Hunter was worth $1,000,000 in 2024.

Notable winners of The Hunter include Coal Crusher (2023), Vilana (2022), Lost And Running (2021), Sweet Deal (2020) and Savatiano (2019).

The 2023 Hunter was won by Coal Crusher from King Of Sparta and Rocketing By.
