Chris Scholtz reviews Sydney trials at Warwick Farm on June 7 and Rosehill on June 11.
ROSEHILL June 11
Inside Grass; Heavy 8
15 Heats – 4 x 1030m (2 Open; 2 Class 1); 11 x 900m (2 Open; 2 3YO; 7 2YO)
Some expensive youngsters showed nice potential with promising trials although most times were well outside standard due to heavy conditions.
GRAM (James Cummings): For the second time this imposing Exceed And Excel youngster made an impression, backing up his strong Gosford trial placing with a classy win in his 900m heat (56.10; 36.01). Settled five lengths off the lead before easing wide off the turn. He was under no pressure to pick up the leaders and was very strong through the line under a hold. Looks a big improver on his only start when placed in a good 2YO field at Newcastle in the spring.
PATIENCE IS VIRTUE (Gerald Ryan/Sterling Alexiou): You won't see many more of More Than Ready's progeny but this unraced 3YO filly will do the late sire justice judging by the talent she displayed in her debut trial over 900m. Showed natural pace to lead easily and had no trouble extending her margin to more than three lengths at the finish with plenty in reserve. Her effort was backed up by the clock, recording the fastest time in the 11 heats over 900m (55.21; 35.57).
SWELTER (Chris Waller): This cleverly named Too Darn Hot filly sports the famous Winx colours and looks to have turned the corner after four previous unplaced trials. With blinkers on she travelled fourth off the pace but responded when given a squeeze in her 900m heat to sprint past the leaders and run to the line with ease for soft win. The time was slow (57.37; 36.16) but the signs are positive.

The 2YO heats created the most interest with other heat winners KINGDOM UNDERSEIGE (55.42; 35.34), MAJWOOD (56.25; 35.74), CARAVANSERAI (57.31; 36.39) and WRITTEN SCANDAL (56.94; 35.74) all doing enough to deserve attention.
PINK SHALALA was a narrow winner of a strong 3YO heat (55.46; 35.29) beating previously noted pair Captain Eagle and Dipsy Doodle in a three way finish. The reliable open company performer TAMERLANE dictated his 1030m heat (63.12; 35.52) from the front while FIELD WIRI won the fastest of the four heats over the distance (62.99; 35.49) with strong win from off the pace.

WARWICK FARM June 7
Polytrack; Synthetic
7 Heats – 2 x 1175m (2 Open); 5 x 740m (3 Open; 1 2YO; 1 Maiden)
Small set of standard trials on the polytrack.
KING OF DRAGONS (Gary Portelli): Unraced Harry Angel colt showed good improvement in his second trial to win the 2YO heat over 740m with style. Sat four deep but was always travelling smoothly and had no trouble opening up a clear advantage turning for home. Went through the line under a goold hold to win the trial by almost two lengths in good time for the session (43.18; 32.73).

TESTATOR SILENS (Joseph Pride): Well performed gelding disappointed when resuming but can turn that form around quickly after winning his 740m heat with authority (43.25; 32.85). Shared the lead on the outside of Wild Botanica and was always travelling the better to gain the upper hand in the drive to the line with both horses having something in reserve.
The import REDSTONE WELL never came off the bit to win the quickest of the two 1175m heats (72.29; 34.67) in his first trial since March. It was an easy trial for most of his rivals with UTOPIAN WINE another who took the eye with his closing fourth.
ORYX is worth noting after winning the quickest of the five 740m heats in good style (42.83; 32.92).
