SINGAPORE: Smart Ride By Moreira Gets The Cash

A smart ride by leading jockey Joao Moreira paved the way to success for Cash Luck in the $65,000 Novice Stakes over 1400m on Friday night.

Sent out the $10 favourite in betting, Cash Luck scored a widening two length victory over Bigdinero (Mohd Suhaimi) with Mandingo (Danny Beasley) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.

With just 51kg on his back, Cash Luck made lightwork of the assignment but it was the decision of Moreira to get going early that saw success come his way.

“Joao summed it up well,” said trainer Michael Freedman.

“There wasn't a lot of pace early in the race and with his lightweight Joao decided to get going on him.

“Sometimes with these types of horse they can get left flat-footed, but he summed it up well and made a race of it over the last 600m.”

Freedman said even though Cash Luck is by an out-and-out sprinter in Bradbury's Luck, the gelding was showing signs of being a stayer through Redoute's Choice, the sire of Bradbury's Luck.

“Some of the Redoute's Choice stock get over a mile-and-a-quarter (2000m) and I think that is where this horse is heading,” said Freedman.

“The way he is racing at the moment he is certainly shaping that he will get further.”

Although successful in the early two-year-old races, Freedman said he had given the gelding a good spell following the Group 2 Golden Horseshoe in May before bringing him back into work.

“He had a nice five or six week break after the Golden Horseshoe as he had done a good job through his early races,” said Freedman.

“I won't overtax him now either. There are some nice opportunities for these types of horses and he should prove a nice horse up here.”

Cash Luck won his first start over 1000m back in February and on Friday was lining-up for his sixth start.

From the Geiger Counter mare Blue Celeste, Cash Luck was an A$12,000 yearling purchase and following his success on Friday night took his prizemoney to just short of $100,000 for Northwest Racing.
