Temporize Cesarewitch bound

3 minute read

Syd Hosie enjoyed his first Glorious Goodwood success when the well-backed Temporize (6/1) continued his progression to land the opening Coral Goodwood Handicap.

The improving four-year-old arrived following a gallant second over two miles at Ascot last-time-out and Syd Hosie's runner found a 1lb rise no issue at Goodwood this afternoon.

Luke Morris always had his mount handily positioned and the result never really looked in doubt when he picked up the running with two furlongs to run. The son of Postponed kept on strongly through the tacky ground and eventually prevailed by one-and-a-three-quarter lengths from Robert Johnson, who ran a blinder from out of the handicap for Phillip Kirby and 3lb claimer Paula Muir.

Irish raider Tronador was back in third.

Winning trainer Syd Hosie said: "I was [confident] today. I thought the step up in trip would actually suit him, so when he got to the front, I thought, 'he's not there too early today'. He stays.

"We went to Newmarket sales three weeks ago and this horse was boxed in row Z down the bottom, and I said to Paul, 'we need to go and see this Johnston horse'. He said, 'it's miles away!' We ended up getting the golf buggy back, but we did buy him."

He added: "We've got 30 horses at home, predominantly jumpers. Paul wanted to get involved and get a Flat horse that we could progress to hurdling, but I don't think we will see this one over a hurdle."

Asked what the plan is, Hosie said the Cesarewitch.

Arc-winning jockey Luke Morris said: "We're always hoping a star will come along, but it's been a very satisfactory season and hopefully there's a good winner or two before the season is out.

"It [the going] is on the easy side of good, but it's very holding and hard work. The ground is soft, but it's gluey ground and not much kick-back."
