STAN FOX STAKES - G2 1500m

Often the next run for the Golden Rose runners, the 3yos then use this as their pipe-opener for the Caulfield Guineas. It has been won by some of the stars of recent years like Denman, Lonhro, General Nediym and Octagonal. Check out just what success these young horses have heading through the Spring.

PROFILING THE RACE

o Fillies can run but haven’t had the best success with Wager, Rare Insight and Dynamic Love the only girls in the last 30 years.

o The old Woodlands, now Darley operation has a great record in the race with 6 of the last 20 winners.

o Consider that Grandsire, sire and son won this in the space of 14 years (Octagonal/Lonhro/Denman).

o Notable for the small fields, only twice have we seen double figures in recent runnings.

o They can get back and run on but the number of runners in front suggests that should not be so hard.

o No one jockey dominating but few who win aren’t considered in the upper echelon.

o Last 10 Years Average Price of winner - $2.10

o Breakdown of winners - 4 geldings, 4 colts & 1 filly.

o Races that the winner ran in prior - Golden Rose (5), Heritage Stks (1), Ming Dynasty Stks (1), Theo Marks Stks (1), Tea Rose Stks (1)

RECENT WINNERS

2013 - EUROZONE 3c (Northern Meteor x Miss Vandal) ($3.25)

Jockey: Hugh Bowman, Trainer: Bart & James Cummings

Barrier: 6, Weight: 56.5kg, Gross Time: 1:30.15

Margin: 0.2L, Track: Good (3), Starters: 6

2nd: Criterion (56.5kg), 3rd: Aussies Love Sport (56.5kg)

Review: Once more this race suffered from the distinct lack of numbers. The Average field size has been 6.7 in last ten runnings which is strange given where the horses who feed this race come from. On a day when it was very windy, leaders were struggling. The Waterhouse yard hate strong wind effects but still took it up with their short favourite Aussies Love Sport. Eurozone had come off the Golden Rose and had first call on the leader but Criterion, who was also in that race, got his back. For all the world Criterion had him but he thinks about it and Eurozone fought back to win again.

2012 - KABAYAN 3g (Haradasun x Tarlaquena) ($2.75)

Jockey: Nash Rawiller, Trainer: Gai Waterhouse

Barrier: 5, Weight: 56.5kg, Gross Time: 1:31.67

Margin: 1.8L, Track: Dead, Starters: 7

2nd: Albrecht (56.5kg), 3rd: Divine Moon (56.5kg)

Review: From the Golden Rose, Kabayan started shorter than his adversary there Albrecht. But punters had things differently here despite a big wind and a no go zone on the rails. Rawiller sat back here and made Albrecht make a long run. He pushed through a gap and outstayed the rival.

Manawanui won the last race he did in 2011 before last week

2011 - MANAWANUI 3g (Oratorio x Lady Remlap) ($1.12 fav)

Jockey: Glyn Schofield, Trainer: Ron Leemon

Barrier: 2, Weight: 56.5kg, Gross Time: 1:29.93

Margin: 1.8L, Track: Good, Starters: 5

2nd: Roma Giaconda (54.5kg), 3rd: Cocky Raider (56.5kg)

Review: Class told in a weak line up bar for the fav as Manawanui turned up to have a ‘barrier trial’. Schofield put him out of trouble, straight to the lead and he simply worked away on his way to the Guineas. It was hardly a contest.
