McEvoy Eyes Off Trainers Title

3 minute read

Tony McEvoy will be hopeful of wrapping up a highly successful 2011/12 season in winning fashion at Morphettville on Saturday with an attack spearheaded by the promising Misty Eyes.

McEvoy has a stranglehold on the 2011/12 South Australia Trainers Premiership having trained 61 winners across the state so far this season.

The horseman sits 10 clear of David Jolly in the overall premiership and is 16 wins ahead of Mark Kavanagh in the South Australia Metropolitan Trainers title.

Two years after McEvoy and businessman Wayne Mitchell combined in taking over the Lindsay Park property at Angaston, McEvoy is obviously pleased with the results the team are enjoying.

“It's been going really good,” McEvoy said.

“We're 16 clear on the board so I'm really excited for my staff who are doing all of the work and obviously the facility we are setting up says that things are going the right way for us and we should get bigger and better as we go on.”

McEvoy will wrap up the season at Morphettville this Saturday with as many as six runners across the eight race program.

Arguably spearheading the charge this weekend is the talented albeit wayward three-year-old Misty Eyes.

The Blackfriars gelding has won his two runs so far this campaign by a combined margin of seven lengths and on Saturday contests the $40,000 Clangalang @ Willow Grove 3YO Handicap (1600m).

Tony McEvoy will no doubt be hopeful his gelding can show some improved racing manners after a wayward effort last start when taking out the Benchmark 75 3YO Handicap (1400m).

“He ran right out on the track last start,”

“He's got the talent to go there but he hasn't got the package at the moment.

Following Prince Of Capers' latest success at Flemington last weekend, Misty Eyes may also find himself racing in Melbourne next season but unlikely this campaign.

“He needs to learn some raceday manners before he can come to Melbourne,” McEvoy said.

“He probably won't come across to Melbourne this prep. I think he is still a bit too wayward at this stage.”

McEvoy could have runners in half the races at Morphettville on Saturday.

Little Critter and Pharomac have each been nominated for the 2YO Ratings 68 Handicap (1050m) with both going into the event with solid form.

Birdman returns to city racing in the 2006m Centrebet Handicap following a dominant seven length romp at Gawler and could also be joined by stablemate Unser.

Connections of Our Sphinx will be hoping their four-year-old can bounce back to form when he contests the Schweppes Handicap (1600m).
