Honest galloper Zin Zan Eddie ploughed through the mud to record his first stakes win at Randwick on Saturday.
The Matthew Smith-trained gelding showed his liking for the heavy conditions in drawing away late for a dominant win in the Listed Tattersalls Club Carrington Stakes (1400m).
Zin Zan Eddie had been a model of consistency since his last victory right on 12 months ago, placing in six of his eight runs since.
He was also a previous winner on the heavy and hadn’t missed a place in three attempts in the going.
Jockey Jason Collett brought Zin Zan Eddie ($3.20) away from the fence in the straight in the small field and the six-year-old let down strongly to chase leader Voilier, eventually drawing clear to win by 2.3 lengths.
The three-year-old Voilier ($4.20) battled on well for second with Hidden Warrior ($5) third.
Collett said the victory was well-deserved given Zin Zan Eddie’s tough and honest racing style.
“It’s great to get a win for (the owners) today,” Collett said.
“He’s been knocking on the door this horse and he got his opportunity today.”
