Last year’s Ramornie Handicap (Listed, 1200m) winner Calanda broke through for his second stakes success in 16 starts with a good win here. He was eased to settle in fifth place (with cover) after a quick beginning. He tracked up well nearing the home turn, challenged halfway down the straight and fought back well to score nicely by a long head. The Kim Waugh-trained Supreme Effort raced back in eighth place after being caught wide early on. He improved well (deep) at the home turn, sprinted quickly to challenge at the 100m and he then battled on gamely to take second. His stablemate Oxford Poet raced in fourth place, one off the rails, moved up nearing the home turn, got the better of the leader (Chetwood) at the 100m and then battled on well for third.
