Kaepernick wins 2018 Southern Cross Stakes Group 3 $150,000 at Randwick (NSW), 1200m.
John O’Shea-trained sprinter Kaepernick staged a good second-up effort in winning here. Racing in blinkers again, he travelled well in last place in the eight-horse field (wide with cover) and not that far from the leaders. He sprinted quickly at the 300m, hit the front at the 100m and fought on to score narrowly but well.
Dothraki raced in fourth place (between runners), got along the inner to challenge at the 200m and kept battling on nicely for second, beaten a long head, albeit after having every chance.
Boss Lane travelled in fifth place (wide with cover), was in a challenging position but just battling on at the 200m before making late ground to take third.
Of the others Clearly Innocent was seventh on the rails but was badly checked at the 200m before running on again for (2.4 lengths) sixth while the favourite Deploy raced in second place, moved up to the leader (Oxford Poet) nearing the home turn but was soon under pressure and weakened to finish (4.9 lengths) last, racing well below his best at his first start since October.
