Another home setback as Glory slump to Macarthur in ALM

3 minute read

A potentially serious knee injury to David Williams had added to Perth Glory's misery as the ALM strugglers fell to a home defeat to Macarthur

Perth Glory's miserable home form in the A-League Men has continued after they were defeated 3-0 by Macarthur at HBF Park.

Seeking to back up a first win of the campaign secured against Brisbane last week, Jed Drew's first-half brace instead ensured the Glory have now lost all five of their home games this season, by a combined score of 17-1.

Stretching back to the previous campaign, it's now 11 games since the Glory took three points from a home league fixture, last doing so in a 3-2 win over the Roar on February 17.

Friday's defeat also ensures David Zdrilic's side remain second-bottom of the ALM, while Mile Sterjovski's Bulls vaulted into fourth thanks after recording their equal best-ever road win.

"I felt we were in control for most of the game," Sterjovski told Paramount.

"We created plenty of chances, I was very pleased.

"It does set us up for a big match on New Year's Day against (Western Sydney)."

Running onto a ball lofted into his path by Marin Jakolis as the Bulls broke in transition, Drew advanced to the top of the box and shot past an advancing Cameron Cook to make it 1-0 in the 27th minute.

The 21-year-old had a brace six minutes later when three Glory defenders proved unable to fight off Kealey Adamson as he fought for a cross-field lob at the top of the box and knocked the ball forward for the winger to turn and convert.

"The last year I've wanted to add more goals to my game," Drew told Paramount.

"That's been my main focus for the year… tonight was a good start and I want to keep building from that."

The deficit compounded a miserable first half for the Glory, who lost popular veteran David Williams to a potentially serious injury just 13 minutes in when his left knee planted and buckled awkwardly after attempting a shot, sending him down in immediate pain and seeing him stretchered off.

Adam Taggart thought he'd given his side hope by making it 2-1 moments before halftime only for the assistant to flag for offside.

Catching the hosts out with their counter-press, the Bulls then sealed the result in the 73rd minute when Jakolis set substitute Ariath Piol up for his second goal of the season.

"Every time (Piol) comes on he's dangerous," said Sterjovski.
