More rain came down than points were played on a wild first day in Melbourne at the Australian Open.

PLAYER OF THE DAY: Mirra Andreeva - the Russian teen channelled the spirit of her Wimbledon-winning, net-rushing coach Conchita Martinez to be the first woman through to the second round with a 6-4 6-4 win over Marie Bouzkova.   

STAT OF THE DAY:  Former US Open finalist Kei Nishikori turned back time to save two match points in a 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 6-2 6-3 victory over Thiego Monteiro.
