The Grahame Begg-trained mare Cabernet showed a touch of class when victorious in the Open Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

Cabernet showed she has a black-type victory ahead of her after easily handling her rivals to score a comfortable win.

Ridden by Brenton Avdulla, Cabernet had raced well in black-type events last spring and that kind of form was on display again on Saturday.

Jumping well from barrier nine, Cabernet settled midfield on the fence behind Mr Unforgettable in the run, some half a dozen lengths off race leader O'Crikey (NZ) who worked across to take up the lead after the field settled.

Avdulla tracked Mr Unforgettable well into the straight, spending little energy, then waited patiently for a way past the leader. At the furlong a way around appeared and Avdulla immediately had Cabernet out and on the way to victory.

The official margin was two-and-three-quarter lengths to Parthian with a short head to Mr Unforgettable in third place.

“”It was good, she got everything made to order,” Begg said.

“Last week the other race didn't pan out the way we would have liked but she raced well.

“She came in off a three-week break then but the quick back-up today she looked absolutely outstanding in the yard.

“Our only concern was the ground because we think she is better on top of the ground but she let down really really well and (Avdulla) rode her really well and it was good to get her over the line.

“I've got no doubt she will definitely win black type race down the track, whether it is this preparation or not, she has so much ability but she has a lot of issues about soundness we have to work through and we just have to place her right.

“She is going to have a short let up and hopefully get ready for a race like the Wiggle Quality."

“I've been waiting for her for a while now,” Avdulla said.

“I have a super record on her but since I rode her in the spring carnival I haven't been able to get back on her.

“I ended up behind the right horse in Mr Unforgettable, I took my time on her because she only has a furlong sprint on her.

“I was laughing to myself when I was a length and a half off them that I hadn't moved on them, she put pay to them pretty quickly and it was a good win.”
