Saltonstall lands Glencairn Stakes
Cheveley Stud-based stallion Pivotal (Polar Falcon) was handed his 153rd stakes winner on Sunday as the Adrian McGuinness-trained Saltonstall (6 g ex Macleya by Winged Love) landed the Glencairn Stakes (Listed, 1m) at Naas.
Having the 30th start of his career, the six-year-old gelding beat Raise You (Lope De Vega) by three and a half lengths, while Quizical (Roderic O'Connor) was another half a length away in third.
Purchased by John Ferguson for €120,000 at the 2015 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, the gelding was then snapped up by Shamrock Thoroughbreds for €44 ,000 at the 2018 Goffs Ireland Horses in Training Sale.
The six-year-old gelding is one of three winners out of Group 2 scorer Macleya (Winged Love), who is herself the daughter of Listed winner Minaccia (Platini).
Macleya is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Montclair (Montjeu) and stakes-placed Mahnaz (Dansili) - the dam of Listed winner Mer Et Nuages (Lope De Vega), while she is also a half-sister to Listed winner Mare Australis (Australia).
Further back this is the same family as Listed-winning duo Mendosino (Acatenango) and Malinda (Law Society).
Pivotal - whose 32 Group 1 winners include last season’s Ranvet Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) winner Addeybb - and he stood for a private fee in 2020.
